⚖️ Understanding Product Weights & Billing

Accurate weight calculation ensures fair, transparent, and consistent billing across all Wefulfil shipping lanes.

Because most products from factories arrive without shipping-ready packaging, Wefulfil measures actual product weight + packaging weight and compares it with volumetric weight to determine the final billable weight.

1. What Is Billable Weight?

The billable weight is the weight used to calculate your shipping cost.

At Wefulfil, billable weight is determined by the higher of:

  • Actual product weight + packaging weight
  • Volumetric (dimensional) weight

This ensures compliance with international carrier billing rules.

2. Actual Product Weight

This is the weight of the SKU alone, measured on arrival at our warehouse.

We re-measure every SKU because factory-provided weights are often inaccurate.

3. Packaging Weight (Important)

Because most suppliers ship items without outer packaging, Wefulfil adds the appropriate packaging for safe international delivery.

This weight is always included in the final billable weight.

Packaging may include:

  • Poly mailer
  • Bubble mailer
  • Branded mailer
  • Protective padding
  • Carton box (if required)
  • Inserts or branding materials

Packaging cost is included in your shipping fee, but packaging weight is used for weight calculation.

4. Typical Packaging Weights

Packaging TypeAverage Weight
Poly mailer8–15 g
Bubble mailer12–25 g
Branded mailer15–30 g
Small box40–60 g
Medium box60–90 g
Large box90–140 g
Inner padding5–20 g

Actual packaging is selected based on product safety and shipping lane requirements.

5. Volumetric (Dimensional) Weight

Volumetric weight reflects the space a package takes on an aircraft.

Wefulfil uses two formulas depending on the shipping lane:

Standard / Economy lanes

Volumetric Weight = (L × W × H) / 6000

Priority / Fast lanes

Volumetric Weight = (L × W × H) / 8000

The lane automatically determines which divisor applies.

6. Final Billable Weight Formula

Billable Weight = max(actual weight + packaging weight, volumetric weight)

Wefulfil’s system automatically calculates this and stores it on the product profile.

7. Billing Precision: Charged by the Gram (g)

Unlike many 3PLs that round weight up to the nearest:

  • 10 g
  • 20 g
  • 100 g

Wefulfil charges based on:

✔ Real weight measured to the gram (g)

This provides:

  • More accurate billing
  • Lower cost per shipment
  • Fairer calculations for small/light items

8. Example Calculation

Product actual weight: 180 g

Packaging weight: 12 g

Actual weight including packaging:

180 g + 12 g = 192 g

Product dimensions: 20 × 15 × 10 cm

Volumetric weight using /6000:

(20 × 15 × 10) / 6000 = 500 g

Final Billable Weight:

max(192 g, 500 g) = 500 g

9. Why Billable Weight May Not Match Your Store Weight

Common reasons:

  • Supplier-provided weights are inaccurate
  • Shopify/Shopline weights do not include packaging
  • Variants may differ in weight
  • Repack or branding adds materials
  • Volumetric weight can exceed actual weight
  • Packaging is adjusted based on courier safety requirements

10. How Wefulfil Measures Weight in the Warehouse

  1. SKU is scanned
  1. Actual weight is measured
  1. Packaging is selected
  1. Combined weight (product + packaging) is measured
  1. Product dimensions are recorded
  1. Volumetric weight is calculated (/6000 or /8000)
  1. System selects the higher value as billable weight
  1. Weight is saved for future orders

All measurements are visible in your Wefulfil dashboard.

11. Tips to Reduce Shipping Cost

  • Use optimized mailers instead of supplier cartons
  • Compress soft items when possible
  • Avoid oversized packaging from suppliers
  • Use Low MOQ branded mailers instead of boxes
  • Request a re-measurement if you suspect variance
  • Ask your AM for packaging optimization suggestions
